Yep, of course I do this. If you don’t want to be surveilled so some creep somewhere can make more money than you do just by selling every miniscule crumb of information to another creep who wants to sell you stuff, then this is a natural thing to take an interest in. It’s a shame that being an admin is like smoking a turd cigar, but it’s remarkable what you can do.

Get a Synology NAS or the like. Put your files on it. Stream your own movies and shows and music. Run your own email and calendar. Stick it all behind a PiHole to keep the ad gnomes stuck in limbo. Throw up an FTP server so you can make your anime collection available to strangers on the internet, and make them use an actual FTP client because anyone too dumb to figure that out doesn’t deserve my bandwidth. Run a fediverse instance if you want. I don’t want to, but people do!

And you can do it for cheap as shit if you want to.
